Zorin OS or ChromeOS Flex—which should I choose?
Choose Zorin OS if you want a more traditional computer with locally installed applications. Choose ChromeOS Flex if most of your life happens in a web browser and simplicity matters more than flexibility.
Both can give suitable older hardware a useful second life. Neither is a free copy of Windows wearing different wallpaper.
Zorin OS suits people who…
- Want a Windows-like desktop and normal folders.
- Need compatible Linux applications installed locally.
- Want more control over the computer.
- Are willing to learn a few differences.
ChromeOS Flex suits people who…
- Mainly browse, email, stream, bank and edit web documents.
- Want a simple system with automatic updates.
- Are comfortable storing much of their work online.
- Do not need Windows programs or Android apps.
The awkward questions
Check your printer, scanner, specialist software and file formats. ChromeOS Flex does not support Google Play Android apps, and Google only guarantees maintained behaviour on certified models. Zorin offers more software freedom, but some Windows-only applications and device utilities will not work.
My rule
If the person wants a simple web appliance, ChromeOS Flex is often the cleaner fit. If they still want a general-purpose desktop computer, Zorin is usually the stronger candidate. If essential work depends on Windows software, neither may be right—and that is useful to discover before wiping anything.
