Older computer advice before replacement

Windows Said No?

If your computer still works but Windows says it cannot upgrade, that does not automatically mean it belongs in the recycling pile. Two free operating systems — Zorin OS and ChromeOS Flex — can often give an older computer a second life.

I’ll only recommend a change if it makes sense for how you actually use your computer.

Two ways to give an older computer a second life

Both are free operating systems that can replace Windows on a healthy older machine. They suit different people. Here’s the plain-English difference.

Zorin OS

A full, familiar desktop that looks and feels a lot like Windows. It runs proper programs on the computer itself, so it works well as a traditional machine for everyday tasks.

Best if you want a normal desktop, some installed software, and a machine that behaves like the computer you already know.

ChromeOS Flex

Google’s fast, simple system that turns an older PC or Mac into something like a Chromebook. Almost everything runs online in the browser, so very little happens on the computer itself — which keeps it extremely light.

Best if you mostly live in a web browser — Gmail, web apps, banking, streaming — and want something very fast and low-maintenance.

Not sure which fits? That’s exactly what the free appraisal is for — tell me how you use your computer and I’ll recommend the sensible route, or tell you honestly if replacement is the better answer. See full older-computer pricing →

Is this what’s happening?

Most people do not start by asking for Linux. They start because Windows has made their computer feel finished.

Windows says unsupported

Your PC works, but Windows 11 says the processor, TPM or Secure Boot is not good enough.

That does not always mean the computer is useless. It means we need to check your options properly.

Windows 10 support is ending

You are seeing warnings about updates, security or the end of support, and you are not sure what to do next.

There may be a sensible route that avoids buying a new computer immediately.

The PC is still useful

It handles web browsing, email, documents, photos or basic home use, but Windows is becoming the problem.

This is exactly where Zorin OS or ChromeOS Flex can sometimes make sense.

You do not want to waste money

A new laptop or desktop might cost hundreds of pounds, and you are not sure you really need one.

My job is to help you decide whether saving this one is sensible.

You are not technical

You may never have heard of Zorin, Linux or alternative operating systems before.

That is fine. I explain it in plain English and only recommend it where it suits the user.

You are unsure what you need

Maybe you just want someone honest to look at the machine and tell you whether it deserves more time.

That is the whole point of the appraisal.
