Mac advice before Mac repairs

Save My Mac

Before you replace your Mac, find out whether it is actually worth saving. I’ll help you understand what’s wrong before recommending any repair, upgrade or replacement.

Which Mac are we talking about?

Every Mac ages differently. Choose yours and I’ll guide you from there.

🖥️

iMac

Often slow because of ageing hard drives, Fusion Drives or older software.

Usually worth checking if it is a 2012–2020 Intel iMac, especially if it feels slow, has a Fusion Drive, or will not update macOS.

  • Slow startup
  • Fusion Drive or hard drive problems
  • Noisy fan or heat
  • macOS support limits
  • SSD upgrade potential

Best next step: tell me the year and screen size.

MacBook

Usually affected by battery health, storage, heat or macOS support limits.

Many Intel MacBooks still have plenty of life left. Some need software optimisation, others benefit from a battery, storage check or full performance service.

  • Battery does not last
  • Gets hot or the fan runs constantly
  • Feels slow or short of storage
  • Will not update macOS
  • Needs a proper internal service

Best next step: tell me which MacBook you have and what it is doing.

Mac mini

Small Macs can often be kept useful for years with the right setup.

Mac minis are often overlooked, but many are excellent everyday computers when they are set up properly.

  • Slow storage
  • Older macOS limits
  • Everyday office or home use
  • Media, music or workshop setups
  • Simple, reliable desktop use

Best next step: tell me the model year and what you use it for.

What’s happening?

Most people don’t need technical answers first. They need to know whether the problem is worth fixing.

My Mac is slow

Slow startup, spinning beachball, freezing or apps taking ages to open.

This is one of the most common problems I see, and there are often cost-effective solutions.

macOS won’t update

Your Mac says it is unsupported or cannot install a newer version of macOS.

This is one of my specialities. Many Intel Macs can safely run a newer version of macOS than Apple officially supports, helping them stay compatible with modern websites, online banking and today’s applications.

Battery drains quickly

Your MacBook no longer lasts, shuts down early or reports that the battery needs service.

Replacing the battery at the right time can help protect your Mac from much more expensive damage later. It’s usually a worthwhile investment.

Fan is noisy or your Mac gets hot

Your Mac runs hotter than it used to, the fan is always on, or performance drops when you are using it.

Heat is often a sign that your Mac needs some attention, not replacing. A professional internal clean, fresh thermal paste and a health check can make a surprising difference.

Storage is full or it’s running slow

Your Mac is running out of space, taking a long time to start up or apps seem slow to open.

Many older Macs don’t need replacing—they simply need modern SSD storage. An SSD upgrade is often one of the biggest improvements you can make and is usually a worthwhile investment.

Something else?

Your Mac doing something different, or you are not sure how to describe it?

Not every problem fits neatly into a list. Tell me what’s happening and I’ll give you an honest opinion on whether it’s worth repairing, upgrading or simply leaving alone.

Is it worth saving?

Not every Mac is worth repairing. Some can be transformed for a sensible cost. Others are better left alone.

I look at the whole picture: the Mac, its condition, what is inside it, how you use it, and whether spending money makes sense.

“My iMac has been completely transformed by Marcus — has literally saved me from having to buy a whole new device. I would most definitely recommend.”
— Aidan Phillips
How old is your Mac?My sweet spot is usually 2012–2020 Intel Macs.

Age matters, but it is not the only thing that decides whether a Mac is worth saving. I mainly specialise in Intel Macs from around 2012 to 2020 because they often offer the best balance of upgrade potential, performance and value. If yours is older or newer, it is still worth asking. I will tell you honestly whether I think it makes sense.

What is its physical condition like?Cosmetic damage is not always the deciding factor.

The outside tells part of the story, but not all of it. A small dent, worn keyboard or cracked screen does not automatically mean a Mac is not worth saving. What matters is whether the damage affects reliability, safety or makes the repair uneconomical. I look at both the cosmetic condition and what is happening inside.

What is inside it?Two Macs from the same year can be very different.

The processor, memory, storage and graphics all affect whether a Mac is still useful. A well-equipped Intel i7 Mac with plenty of RAM can still be a very capable machine, while a lower-spec model from the same year may have less headroom. That is why I assess the specification before recommending work.

How do you use your Mac?The right advice depends on the person using it.

A Mac that is perfect for email, web browsing, photos and office work may not be right for heavy creative work. If you use demanding software such as video editing, music production or design, the answer depends on the exact Mac and its specification. My advice is based on what you need your Mac to do every day.

Is it worth the investment? The real question is whether the outcome makes sense.

I do not just compare the repair cost with what the Mac might sell for second-hand. I compare it with what replacing it would mean for you: the cost of a new Mac, moving your data, changing your setup and throwing away a machine you may still like using. Sometimes the best advice is to upgrade. Sometimes it is to save your money.
