What used to last hours now dies in minutes, or the laptop only works plugged in.
Sudden shutdowns
The battery shows charge left, then the machine switches off without warning.
“Service recommended” or health warning
macOS or Windows itself is telling you battery health has dropped — worth acting on before it fails outright.
The case doesn’t sit flat
Trackpad feels stiff, the bottom case bulges, or the laptop rocks on a table — possible swelling, see the safety note below.

A swollen battery is a physical safety issue, not just poor battery life. Lithium-ion cells can expand as they age or fail — the case bulging, a stiff trackpad, or the laptop rocking on a table are warning signs, not cosmetic quirks.
