ChromeOS Flex
If you mostly live in a web browser, ChromeOS Flex can make an older PC or Mac feel fast and simple again. It is Google’s free system, and because almost everything runs online, very little happens on the computer itself.
ChromeOS Flex in plain English
Google’s free, web-focused system for people who mostly live in a browser.
What is ChromeOS Flex?
ChromeOS Flex is a free operating system from Google that installs onto many older PCs and Macs and turns them into something very similar to a Chromebook. It is built around the Chrome web browser and online apps rather than traditional installed programs.
It tends to start up quickly, updates itself quietly in the background and needs very little looking after, which makes it a calm, low-maintenance option for the right person.
I recommend it when someone mainly uses the web and wants their older computer to feel fast and simple again — not because it is fashionable.
- Browse the web
- Use Gmail and web email
- Online banking
- Google Docs, Sheets and web Office
- Watch YouTube and streaming services
- Video calls and everyday web apps
Is ChromeOS Flex right for you?
It is wonderfully simple for the right person, but it is more limited than a full Windows or Zorin desktop. Honesty matters here.
Often a good fit for
- People who mostly use a web browser
- Gmail, Google Workspace and web-based work
- Students who need a fast, simple machine
- Streaming, browsing, email and video calls
- Older laptops that feel slow but are still healthy
- Anyone who wants very low maintenance
Not always right for
- Windows-only desktop software
- The full desktop version of Microsoft Office
- Android or Google Play Store apps (not supported on Flex)
- Serious PC gaming or heavy creative software
- Specialist printers or devices that need Windows drivers
- People with little or no internet access

ChromeOS Flex Suitability Check
I’ll check whether your computer and the way you work are a good match before recommending anything.
ChromeOS Flex Installation
Clean setup of ChromeOS Flex on a suitable computer, with plain-English guidance so you know what has changed.
SSD + ChromeOS Flex Refresh
For older machines with slow storage, a new SSD and clean setup can make the computer feel even quicker.
Data and Setup Help
Help moving your files, bookmarks, email and everyday accounts so the computer feels ready to use.
Transparent ChromeOS Flex pricing
Guide prices only. I’ll always confirm the exact cost before any work starts.
If ChromeOS Flex is not the right answer for how you work, I’ll tell you — and we’ll look at Zorin, a Windows upgrade or replacement instead.
Want a full desktop that runs programs?
If you need installed software or some things working offline, Zorin OS may suit you better. It is still light, but it does a little more on the computer itself rather than in the browser.
