Often—but not automatically. I look at its condition, the fault, software support, what you use it for and the complete repair cost. One sensible upgrade can be excellent value; several expensive faults can make replacement the honest answer.

Age is not a diagnosis. A well-built older machine with healthy hardware may remain useful, while a newer budget laptop with damaged hinges and soldered limitations may not be worth repairing.

Replacement usually makes sense when several costly faults arrive together, essential software is no longer supported, performance cannot meet your real needs, or reliability matters more than extending the machine’s life.

Keeping useful hardware longer normally avoids waste, but an uneconomical repair is not automatically responsible. The aim is a dependable extra life, not preserving every computer at any price.

You tell me the model, symptoms and what you need the computer to do. I give you an initial honest view before recommending paid work. It is advice first, not a disguised booking form.

It helps, but “not sure” is a perfectly acceptable starting point. A photograph of the model label or the information shown under About This Mac or Windows System Information can usually identify it.

An SSD has no moving parts. A Fusion Drive combines a small amount of flash storage with a mechanical hard drive. It was a clever compromise when SSDs were expensive, but its mechanical half can become a serious bottleneck. Compare them →

No. Newer software may improve browser and application compatibility, but it can demand more from old hardware or break older applications. The best version is the one that remains stable and supports the work you do.

No. Normal support ended on 14 October 2025, but Windows 10 still starts. The important change is that ordinary security fixes, feature updates and Microsoft technical support ended unless an eligible machine is covered by Extended Security Updates. Yes. Some compatible PCs have TPM or Secure Boot disabled in firmware settings. Do not change encryption or firmware settings casually; make sure important data and any BitLocker recovery key are safe first.

Windows 11 compatibility is partly a security and support policy. An older processor may still feel fast but fall outside Microsoft’s approved list. A failed check does not prove the computer is physically useless.

Unsupported routes exist, but they are not equivalent to official support and future updates are not guaranteed. The decision needs a backup, a recovery plan and an honest comparison with supported alternatives.

ESU provides eligible Windows 10 computers with important security updates for a limited transition period. It does not provide new features or turn Windows 10 back into a fully supported long-term system.

Usually, when a healthy and otherwise useful computer still starts from a mechanical hard drive. An SSD improves startup and responsiveness, but it cannot repair every fault. Check whether it is good value →

No. It stops making the processor wait for slow storage. That can transform how the computer feels without changing the processor itself.

Data can often be cloned or migrated, but no storage work should begin without a backup. If the original drive is failing, protecting important data comes before repeated tests or cloning attempts.

Dust, blocked airflow, a failing fan, dried thermal material or heavy background work can all increase heat. A computer may reduce its speed to protect itself, which is called thermal throttling. Read The Thermal Trap →

Occasionally unwanted startup software needs removing, but cleaner applications cannot repair a failing drive, inadequate memory or poor cooling. A dashboard full of red warnings is not a diagnosis.

Probably not one part at a time without pricing the complete repair. An SSD may be good value, but not if the battery, hinges, screen and charging socket are also failing.

No. Some have native Linux or web versions and some may work through compatibility tools, but essential Windows-only applications must be checked before switching.

Microsoft 365 for the web works in supported Linux browsers. LibreOffice can handle many ordinary Office files locally, but complex macros, add-ins and formatting need testing. See the Office options →

It is a Google operating system that turns suitable existing PC or Mac hardware into a simple, web-focused computer. It resembles a Chromebook but has important differences. Read the plain-English guide →

No. Google guarantees maintained behaviour only for models on its certified list. A non-certified computer may work today but is not promised continued stability after updates.

It does not provide the normal Google Play Android-app experience found on many Chromebooks. Do not choose it based on advice that assumes a purpose-built Chromebook.

Not always. Confirm synchronisation has completed and that you can sign in and open files from another device. For irreplaceable data, keep an independent second copy.

Usually, yes, by starting from a USB drive. A live test may be slower, but it helps check Wi-Fi, sound, keyboard, webcam and basic applications before erasing anything.

Common printers may work, but compatibility is not universal. Check the exact model, scanning requirements and any manufacturer software before removing Windows.

It can be practical through a supported, current browser. Check the bank’s requirements, install updates and remain alert to scams. For business or regulated banking, ask the provider what it officially supports.

Documents, photographs, Desktop and Downloads files, locally stored email, bookmarks, specialist projects, licence information and recovery keys. Then open a selection directly from the backup to prove it works.
